This post was inspirated by my new book – Old Man Drinks: Recipe, Advice, Barstool Wisdom by Robert Schnakenberg (Quirk Books, 2010).
It is one of the great book in my shelf. The list of cocktail is very interesting (for real man, of course!) and include a lot of classic – Martini, Manhattan, Old-Fashioned etc. Actually in this book you can not find cosmo’s or appletini’s – only old man drinks. Only refined classic for all times. And the zest of this book is photo of old man (great portraits, actually) and barstool wisdom is short and unwearying form.
For my todays mood I choose one interesting cocktail with classic composition – spirit, lemon juice and sweetener:
New York Cocktail
50 ml blended whiskey
25 ml fresh lemon juice
1/2 tsp grenadine
1 tsp. superfine sugar
Combine all ingredients in the shaker filled with ice. Shake well. Strain into chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a lemon twist.
As author advice I use Crown Royal Fine de Luxe Blended Canadian Wisky for this cocktail. Also I use homemade pomegranate grenadine for real man results.
The New York Cocktail is great Old Man Drinks. It has sweet and sour taste with great whisky palate. The aftertaste is long and pleasant with notes of wood and honey.
