The Tequila Sunrise is one of the pop-idol of modern age. This cocktail was invented in bar of Aqua Caliente, Tijuana, Mexico under the Prohibition.

The authentic Tequila Sunrise Cocktail consist of tequila, fresh lime or lemon juice, grenadine and creme de cassis:

Tequila Sunrise old-style

45 ml tequila
20 ml fresh lime juice
1-2 tsp. simple syrup (optional)
1 tsp. grenadine
1 tsp. creme de cassis
soda
Shake tequila, juice and syrup and strain into ice-filled collins glass. Slowly pour the mix of grenadine and liqueur. Add soda.

The old-style Tequila Sunrise has bright flavor and palate of tequila with light fruitness. I use one of my 100%-agave tequila – Leyenda del Milagro Silver for this drink.

After Prohibition popular Tequila Sunrise come to the USA. Pragmatic american barman modify the recipe. Creme de cassis was eliminate and the fresh lemonade was change with orange juice. But popularity of this cocktail grow.

Tequila Sunrise

40 ml tequila
120 ml fresh oranje juice
15 ml grenadine
Pour into ice-filled collins glass tequila, juice and add grenadine to create chromatic effect (sunrise), do not stir.

A properly make Tequila Sunrise Cocktail – with good tequila (like Jose Cuervo Classico – one of the best mixto that I taste), fresh pressed orange juice and quality grenadine – is excellent drink. It has so sweet fruit citrus taste with great tequila notes. Fantastic summer drink ever.

Also you may serve your perfect Tequila Sunrise into cocktail glass or champagne-fluite straight up. It is right choice for so strong version with good 100% agave tequila.

My choice is so strong version with a little grenadine. This Tequila Sunrise has bright and powerful taste of tequila.

This post is about one of my first cocktail – the Sex on the Beach Cocktail (SOTB). The SOTB is relatively young and popular cocktail. It was invented approximately in end of 80-s or start of 90-s for promotion of peach schnapps. Some people consider that name of SOTB connected with sex scandal with William Kennedy Smith. This cocktail is so popular around the world but actualy is not a classic cocktail.

As a many cocktail novice I liked this cocktail very much at one time. This cocktail has sweet and fresh taste, simply preparation and looks so good. Now I decide to prepare and compare some popular recipe of Sex on the Beach Cocktail.

My [historically] first Sex on the Beach Cocktail contains only four ingredients – vodka (always use good premium or ultrapremium vodka with clear and neutral taste), peach schnapps, freshpressed orange juice and preserved cranberry juice. Similar recipe was found in the The Classic Bar and Cocktail Book by Jonathan Goodall:

Sex on the Beach

30 ml vodka
30 ml peach schnapps
50 ml fresh orange juice
50 ml cranberry juice
Build all ingredients in highball glass with ice. Garnish with piece of orange and maraschino cherry.

By the way, I prefer to add one barspoon of grenadine in my Sex on the Beach for more bright color. The Sex on the Beach Cocktail has sweet taste with some piquantness of the peach schnapps and cranberry juice. It is admirable cocktail for some cases or peoples.

Similar composition has “official” SOTB from IBA (International Bartenders Association) site.

Sex on the Beach

30 ml vodka
30 ml peach schnapps
60 ml fresh orange juice
60 ml cranberry juice
60 ml pineapple juice
Build all ingredients in highball glass with ice. Garnish with piece of orange and maraschino cherry.

This version is more sweet and more light. Great sweet cocktail for modern dancing club. If you use fresh pressed pineapple juice you may obtain excellent results and very delicious drink.

Next recipe I found in The Craft of the Cocktail by Dale DeGroff. Many good barmans consider that it is more classic recipe of the Sex on the Beach Cocktail:

8 ml Chambord (raspberry liqueur)
60 ml cranberry juice
60 ml pineapple juice
Shake all ingredients and strain into highball glass with ice. Garnish with piece of lime.

I use Bols Raspberry except Chambord on Darcy`s advice. This version has sweet and piquant taste too.

Great sweet cocktail. This recipe of Sex on the beach Cocktail is so similar to the rest of. All of specified recipe of Sex on the Beach are admirable drinks for some cases and some peoples.

In my Sex on the Beach I use ultrapremim vodka – Russian Standart Platinum. I use three trademarks of peach schnapps – Teichenne Melocoton (Peach) schnapps, Marie Brizard Licor de Melocoton and Bols Peach liqueur – with good results.

The theme of this MxMo is Fruit Liqueur. In my liquor cabinet are about 40 bottle of fruit liqueur :) But I have not time to explore this!

I found this sweet french cocktail in Michael Jackson`s Bar and Cocktail Book last summer. This fruity cocktail very impressed me and my guests.

Kirsch and Cassis

60 ml Creme de Cassis
30 ml kirsch
soda water
Shake with lot of crushed ice thoroughly. Serve in balloon wine glass with few large ice cube and add soda.

Extremely fruity!

This cocktail was found on my favorite imbibers blog – The Cocktail Chronicles some weeks ago. Paul`s description of this cocktail is so intriguing and compositions seems me very interesting. Unusual combination of heavy rum
and reposado tequila with creme de cassis and lime (Paul`s limes were lousy… hm-m-m-m… my favorite words for describing bad quality ungredients) promise interesting taste.

Sangre de Agave

45 ml reposado tequila (Sierra Reposado Gold)
15 ml dark, heavy rum (Angostura 1919)
20 ml fresh lime juice
15 ml creme de cassis
3 ml gomme syrup
Shake. Cocktail glass.

Admirable! Very rich and interesting taste. But relatively to Angostura 1919 rest ingredients are lousy :) may be except lime…

It is one of modern fetish. My favorite recipe is not so simple as original (or common).

Tequila Sunrise

7 ml grenadine
7 ml creme de cassis
splash soda
fill the orange juice
20 ml reposado tequila
Shake grenadine, creme de cassis, soda and strain in icefilled collins glass. Add ice and orange juice, float tequila.
