In this post I describe real cock tail – amazing multicolor drink – Pousse Cafe. The Pousse Cafe cocktail is so old creation. This drink was invented in the Europe (France), probably. But we can found suggestions that this cocktail was invented in New Orlean, USA. The first print recipe with illustration I was found in the great How to Mix Drinks, or the Bon-Vivant’s Companion by Jerry Thomas in 1862. Layered cocktail with name Pousse l’Amour consist of brandy, two liqueurs and egg yolk. The real fancy drink! The Gary Regan in yours The Joy of Mixology specify that Pousse Cafe are drinks made by floating one ingredient on top of another, or several others, to create a multilayered effect.

Actually this drink has awesome look. It is real rainbow in your glass. But the taste of this cocktail may be frustrating. This drink as a rule consist of sweet liqueur without any diluent. I hope it may be great digestive in some case. Now the Pousse Cafe cocktail has many modern reincarnation in so popular layered shooters.
The greatest modern Pousse Cafe is B-52 cocktail. This cocktail was created at Alice’s Restaurant in Malibu, USA, in 1972 or at the Keg Steakhouse in Calgary, Canada in 1977. This child of Cold War consist of Kahlua, Baileys Irish Cream and Grand Marnier (the mnemonic: The B52 bomber Kills Bad Guys). Now I propose to explore some another popular modern shooters, several from them are variations of B-52.

K.G.B.
10 ml Kahlua
10 ml Galliano
10 ml Hennessy VS Cognac
Layer in the order given in a pousse-cafe glass (or in the liqueur glass, or shooter, or sherry glass).
For preparation this beautiful cocktail you should have steady hand, bar spoon and acceptable 1 or 2 ounce Pousse Cafe glass or something similar like sherry glass, shooter or liqueur glass. Pour first ingredient into glass then you insert the spoon into glass as far as it will go, with the back side of the bowl facing up. Pour next layer slowly and carafully. Repeat if required.
Bumble Bee
10 ml Kahlua
10 ml sambuca
10 ml Irish cream liqueur
Layer in the order given in an appropriate glass.
Slippery Nipple
5 ml grenadine
15 ml sambuca
10 ml Irish Cream liqueur
Layer in the order given in an appropriate glass.
Monkey Lunch aka Banana Sandwich
10 ml Kahlua
10 ml creme de banane
10 ml Irish Cream liqueur
Layer in the order given in an appropriate glass.
French Kiss
10 ml amaretto liqueur
10 ml Frangelico
10 ml Irish Cream Liqueur
Layer in the order given in an appropriate glass.
All of this cocktails are working. My choice is K.G.B. and French Kiss. And the Slippery Nipple has best look in this company.
And in the conclusion we explore two real infante terrible of the cocktail world, two ugly concoctions in the cyberpunk style – the Brain Haemorrhage and Hiroshima shooters.

Brain Haemorrhage
10 ml grenadine
30 ml peach schnapps
20 ml Irish Cream liqueur
Layer in the order given in tall shooter glass. Then drop few grenadine on top.
The taste of this potion is very, may be extremely sweet and it has absolutely ugly appearance.
Hiroshima Shooter
20 ml sambuca
20 ml Irish Cream liqueur
20 ml absinthe (XENTA Absenta)
Layer in the order given in tall shooter glass. Then drop few grenadine on top. Flame the absinthe and serve with dramatic laughter.
It is one of the most disgusting libations that I ever taste. It is awful drink.

The most cited story about Harvey Wallbanger Cocktail is about California surfer Harvey, who, after losing important competition one day visited his favorite Duke’s Blackwatch bar. He consumed a lot more of the special Screwdrivers (aromatized with Galliano) than he should have and it is causing to bang against the wall. Some people suggest that the idea of adding Galliano into Screwdriver was Harvey’s invention. Than drink and its name born.
Another story of creation the Harvey Wallbanger Cocktail was founded in The Joy of Mixology by Gary Regan (also you may read this story on his site – Ardent Spirits.com). The Regan wrote “According to an article in Bartender magazine, by Brooks Clark, the Harvey Wallbanger was created at a party in the mid-1960s in Newport Beach, California. The host of the party was a certain Bill Doner, then a sports editor for a small newspaper, and he found that the only potables he had available to him were vodka, frozen orange juice, and a bottle of Galliano, so he simply mixed them all together. In the early hours of the morning one of the guests, by the name of Harvey was found banging his head against the wall, and blaming Doner’s concoction for his misery. A drink was born.“
Actually seems that both story is advertising tool of Galliano owners in USA. Really Harvey Wallbanger is one of the most famous and popular cocktail of the 1970-s. This drink has own National Day which celebrated November, 5.
Harvey Wallbanger is to similar to one of the famous highballs – the Screwdriver. It consist of vodka, orange juice with float Galliano liqueur on top. The key ingredient of the Harvey Wallbanger Cocktail is italian vanilla and liquorice flavored liqueur Galliano. Now new owner of this brand – Lucas Bols Company – renewed original taste of Galliano in Galliano l’Autentico Liqueur. But I use old Galliano Vanilla for my cocktails.

Harvey Wallbanger
30 ml vodka
60-90 ml fresh orange juice
15 ml Galliano
Build vodka and juice in tall glass over ice. Stir briskly and float Galliano on the top. Garnish with an orange slice or wheel and maraschino cherry (optional).
One of my secret of good Harvey Wallbanger Cocktail is using of “normalized” orange juice. The taste of fresh orange juice is so different time to time but I add some simple syrup in the fres juice for optimal sweet and sour balance.
The Harvey Wallbanger Cocktail is great so sweet citrus refreshing drink with smooth vanilla flavor. It is amazing drink for summer or beach or nightclub.
Harvey Wallbanger has Mexican cousine – Freddy Fudpucker, this cocktail contain tequila blanco instead vodka.

Freddy Fudpucker
30 ml tequila
90 ml fresh orange juice
15 ml Galliano
Build tequila and juice in tall glass over ice. Stir briskly and float Galliano on the top. Garnish with an orange slice.
The Freddy Fudpucker Cocktail has very interesting flavor and taste. The Galliano liqueur enlarge taste and flavor of tequila and it result great drink. It is admirable cocktail.

The Golden Cadillac Cocktail is one of the famous after-dinner cocktail from Alexander`s family. It was invented at Poor Red`s Saloon in El Dorado, California, near Sutter`s Mill, which was Gold Rush territory, hence the name (or only half of the name :) ). It has composition similar to Alexander – spirit, liqueur, cream. Simply and very tasty. This kind of cocktail is great stuff for St. Valentine`s Day evening.

Golden Cadillac
30 ml Galliano
30 ml creme de cacao white
30 ml cream
Shake vigorously and pour in a cocktail glass.
Salvatore ‘The Maestro’ Calabrese garnish some of creamy cocktail with ground-cherry. I think that is great idea. A ground-cherry is very interesting and good-looking garnish for cocktails.

The Golden Cadillac Cocktail has sweet, creamy taste with chocolate and vanilla with a hint of spices palate. It is admirable cocktail.
My next choice for Valentine`s evening is modern Creme Brulee Martini. This recipe was found on the so interesting site – Cocktail Times. It is so rare chance to use in cocktails another interesting italian hazelnut liqueur – Frangelico.

Creme Brulee Martini
45 ml vanilla-flavored vodka
30 ml Frangelico
15 ml Cointreau
30 ml half and half
Shake. Pour in a cocktail glass and garnish with a vanilla stick.
I use Absolut Vanilla in my cocktail. The result are excellent. The Creme Brulee Martini is sweet creamy cocktail with comlex palate. It is like an ice-cream from my childhood.

I not sure tiki or not is this cocktail in fact, but I feel that it is tiki :)

A Lulu
30 ml light Puerto Rican rum
15 ml creme de noyeau (I use DiSaronno Originale)
30 ml fresh orange juice
15 ml passion fruit (mixer)
15 ml Galliano
Shake. Strain into ice-filled rocks glass.
As “passion fruit (mixer)” (wtf?) I use mix of passionfruit syrup and fresh lemon juice 1:1. I use Italian almond liqueur Disaronno Originale (Amaretto) instead creme de noyeau (french almond liqueur).
Admirable! Sweet and exotic taste and good balanced.
