Metropolitan Cocktail

14 November 2009 · No Comments

This interesting modern cocktail was found on the Dale`s DeGroff site. The Metropolitan cocktail is so close to the Cosmopolitan, but use black currant vodka instead citron vodka. Dale DeGroff inform that author of this version of the Metropolitan Сocktail is Mike Hewett at Marion`s Bar on the Bowery in the NYC. Site and two books – The Craft of the Cocktail by Dale DeGroff and The Essential Cocktail by Dale DeGroff has similar composition but different proportions. This proportion was found on the Dale`s DeGroff site.

The Metropolitan Cocktail in the dark (Коктейль Метрополитан)

Metropolitan

60 ml Absolut Kurant
15 ml cranberry juice
8 ml Roses lime juice
8ml fresh lime juice
Shake with ice and pour into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with a lime wedge.

The Metropolitan Cocktail is admirable cocktail with strong and dilicious currant taste with a hint of citrus. For more smooth, light and sweet cocktail you may to decrease the amount of vodka to 45 ml and inrease the amount of cranberry juice to 20 ml and lime syrup to 15 ml (as in The Essential Cocktail by Dale DeGroff specified).

Sex on the Beach

7 November 2009 · 10 Comments

This post is about one of my first cocktail – the Sex on the Beach Cocktail (SOTB). The SOTB is relatively young and popular cocktail. It was invented approximately in end of 80-s or start of 90-s for promotion of peach schnapps. Some people consider that name of SOTB connected with sex scandal with William Kennedy Smith. This cocktail is so popular around the world but actualy is not a classic cocktail.

As a many cocktail novice I liked this cocktail very much at one time. This cocktail has sweet and fresh taste, simply preparation and looks so good. Now I decide to prepare and compare some popular recipe of Sex on the Beach Cocktail.

My [historically] first Sex on the Beach Cocktail contains only four ingredients – vodka (always use good premium or ultrapremium vodka with clear and neutral taste), peach schnapps, freshpressed orange juice and preserved cranberry juice. Similar recipe was found in the The Classic Bar and Cocktail Book by Jonathan Goodall:

The Sex on the Beach Cocktail garnished with red maraschino cherry and orange wedge (Коктель Секс на пляже)

Sex on the Beach

30 ml vodka
30 ml peach schnapps
50 ml fresh orange juice
50 ml cranberry juice
Build all ingredients in highball glass with ice. Garnish with piece of orange and maraschino cherry.

By the way, I prefer to add one barspoon of grenadine in my Sex on the Beach for more bright color. The Sex on the Beach Cocktail has sweet taste with some piquantness of the peach schnapps and cranberry juice. It is admirable cocktail for some cases or peoples.

Similar composition has “official” SOTB from IBA (International Bartenders Association) site.

Next recipe was found in The Bar and Cocktail Book by Michael Jackson (russain edition).

The Sex on the Beach garnished with a cherry (Коктейль Секс на пляже украшенный вишней)

Sex on the Beach

30 ml vodka
30 ml peach schnapps
60 ml fresh orange juice
60 ml cranberry juice
60 ml pineapple juice
Build all ingredients in highball glass with ice. Garnish with piece of orange and maraschino cherry.

This version is more sweet and more light. Great sweet cocktail for modern dancing club. If you use fresh pressed pineapple juice you may obtain excellent results and very delicious drink.

Next recipe I found in The Craft of the Cocktail by Dale DeGroff. Many good barmans consider that it is more classic recipe of the Sex on the Beach Cocktail:

The Sex on the Beach Cocktail garnished with lime wheel and maraschino cherry (Коктейль Секс на пляже украшенный колесиком лайма и мараскиновой вишней)

Sex on the Beach

45 ml vodka
15 ml peach schnapps
8 ml Chambord (raspberry liqueur)
60 ml cranberry juice
60 ml pineapple juice
Shake all ingredients and strain into highball glass with ice. Garnish with piece of lime.

I use Bols Raspberry except Chambord on Darcy`s advice. This version has sweet and piquant taste too.

And finally I taste this recipe, which was founded in one of my favorite site – cocktailtimes.com:

The Sex of the Beach Cocktail garnished with orange wheel and cherry (Коктейль Секс на пляже украшенный кружком апельсина и красной вишней)

Sex on the Beach

45 ml vodka
20 ml peach schnapps
15 ml creme de cassis
60 ml cranberry juice
60 ml orange juice
Shake all ingredients and strain into highball glass with ice. Garnish with lime wedge.

Great sweet cocktail. This recipe of Sex on the beach Cocktail is so similar to the rest of. All of specified recipe of Sex on the Beach are admirable drinks for some cases and some peoples.

In my Sex on the Beach I use ultrapremim vodka – Russian Standart Platinum. I use three trademarks of peach schnapps – Teichenne Melocoton (Peach) schnapps, Marie Brizard Licor de Melocoton and Bols Peach liqueur – with good results.

MxMo XLI Vodka Is Your Friend: Black Russian and White Russian (with a little Magic)

10 August 2009 · 3 Comments

This MxMo XLI “Vodka Is Your Friend” dedicate to one of my favorite strong alcoholic beverage – vodka. Vodka (or in ukrainian tradition is spelled as gorilka) is strong colorless and tastless beverage which made from neutral refined (rectified) spirit obtained as a rule from grain (rye or wheat). Our tradition of vodka consumption is very interesting and connected with traditional ukrainian hospitality, lavishness and friendliness. Usually we drink about 0,5 l vodka per man in one evening with large meal and pleasure talk. Such tradition called “bukhat` s drugom”.

But for my blog I use vodka for many delicious cocktails. In this post I investigate some cocktail with “russian” name – Black Russian (great classic digestive cocktail) and its famous cousin – White Russian.

One of first scene with Black Russian Cocktail we can see in the Ninotchka (1939) movie with great Gretta Garbo as russian komissar Ninotchka (see also another great vodka cocktail). This cocktail is simple but elegant combination of quality vodka and coffee liqueur. In my liquor cabinet I have two famous coffee liqueur – mexican liqueur from pure Arabica coffee – Kahlua and jamaican liqueur from Blue Montain coffee – Tia Maria. Usually cocktail Black Russian are prepared as build cocktail, but some connoisseur advise to use shake.

The Black Russian (Коктейль Черный Русский)

Black Russian

45 ml vodka
20 ml coffee liqueur (Kahlua)
Build over ice on a rocks glass. No garnish.

or

Another Black Russian

45 ml vodka
20 ml coffee liqueur (Tia Maria)
Shake. Cocktail glass, maraschino cherry for garnish.

Black Russian Cocktail is sweet digestive (afterdinner) cocktail with bright taste of coffee. My choice is Black Russian Cocktail with Tia Maria liqueur, shaken. It is great very smooth, sweet and little dry cocktail. It has so complex taste with note of rum, sugarcane and vanilla. But it is no so black :)

This cocktail with a dash of fresh lemon juice turn into Black Magic Cocktail.

The Black Magic Cocktail (Коктейль Черная Магия)

Black Magic

45 ml vodka
20 ml coffee liqueur
1 dash fresh lemon juice
Build in ice-filled rocks glass. Garnish with a lemon twist.

It is great, smooth anв very pleasant afterdinner cocktail with interesting taste of coffee.

The Black Russian Cocktail with cream turn into White Russian Cocktail (Black Russian with White Cap if it are preparing as build :). This cocktail is so popular, some Dude consume nine the same during one film :)

The White Russian Cocktail (Коктейль Белый Русский)

White Russian

40 ml vodka
20 ml coffee liqueur
20 ml light cream
Build (shake). Rocks glass.

This cocktail is sweet and creamy booze. It is no my choice, but if you, dude, like sweet and creamy stuff is your choice… :)

Caipirinha! Caipirissima! Caipiroska!

16 July 2009 · 20 Comments

Caipirinha is simple and gorgeous cocktail from heritage Brazilian rum-like sugarcane based spirit cachaca. Caipirinha is traditional drink from local ingredients – cachaca, lime and sugar.

Caipirinha cocktail has two sister – Caipirissima (with white rum instead cachaca) and Caipiroska (with vodka instead cachaca). Both are excellent drink. Please use my photo-guide for best Caipirinha / Caipirissima / Caipiroska!

First you need some key ingredients – cachaca (white rum or vodka), lime and sugar. I use sugar syrup from refined and unrefined cane sugar with 2:1 ratio. You may add sugar as crystal or powder.

Making of Caipirinha. Step 1. Cachaca, lime, rich sugar syrup (Делаем Кайпиринью. Шаг 1. Кашаса, лайм, сахарный сироп)

Also you need some simple stuff: knife, muddler and jigger (optional).

Making of Caipirinha. Step 2. Barware - knife, muddler, jigger (Делаем Кайпиринью. Шаг 2. Барное оборудование - барный нож, мадлер, джигер)

First cut lime on 8 chunks.

Making of Caipirinha. Step 3. Lime chunks and bar-knife (Делаем Кайпиринью. Шаг 3. Дольки лайма и барный нож)

Next step – add sugar syrup.

Making of Caipirinha. Step 4. Lime chunks in rich sugar syrup (Делаем Кайпиринью. Шаг 4. Дольки лайма залитые сахарным сиропом)

Muddle lime chunks with syrup.

Making of Caipirinha. Step 5. Muddled lime and muddler (Делаем Кайпиринью. Шаг 5. Раздавленные дольки лайма и мадлер)

Pack glass with muddled lime with ice cube.

Making of Caipirinha. Step 6. Muddled lime and ice (Делаем Кайпиринью. Шаг 6. Раздавленный лайм и лед)

You may stir your Caipirinha / Caipirissima / Caipiroska. But I prefer shake this cocktail. Thus pour muddled lime with ice in metal part of boston shaker, add 2 oz. cachaca / white rum / vodka and slightly shake.

Making of Caipirinha. Step 7. Boston shaker (Делаем Кайпиринью. Шаг 7. Бостон-шейкер)

Pour cocktail on rocks glass (don’t use a strainer, pour your Caipirinha / Caipirissima / Caipiroska with ice). Serve.

The Caipirinha / Caipirissima / Caipiroska (Кайпиринья / Кайпириссима / Кайпироска)

Caipirinha / Caipirissima / Caipiroska

60 ml cachaca / white rum / vodka
1 small fresh lime
sugar syrup to taste (15 ml sugar syrup)
Muddle. Stir. Rocks glass.

Caipirinha / Caipirissima / Caipiroska – is great, very refreshing, sweet and sour cocktail with bright and smooth taste. Enjoy with your favorite Latino music :)
